The Summer 2009 issue of the Eagle Flyer newsletter is being made available both in hard copy and in an electronic version. We are testing the feasibility of distributing the newsletter electronically as this would reduce our expenses and also because some families have indicated a preference for a paperless version of the newsletter. If we continue to produce the electronic version of the Eagle Flyer during the upcoming school year, families might be able to "opt out" of receiving the hard copy version. The hard copy version of the Eagle Flyer will be mailed home within the next couple of weeks. Your feedback regarding the electronic Eagle Flyer would be helpful as we decide how to proceed in the future. Please send comments to Alison Witt-Janssen at aliwit@comcast.net or Ellen Schwarzbach at EllenPTA2008@aol.com.

Class Mural

by Ms, Adler

Advanced Art proudly presented their mural to Chute on May 20. Each student in class had their own canvas to create. When the canvases were put together, the peace sign image was complete. The mosaic will hang in the eighth grade wing since it correlates with the Social Studies curriculum. A movie was made to present the art to the school. Additionally, to keep with the spirit of the event, students made tie-dye t-shirts for the presentation. Mr. McHolland and Mr. Brown were also presented with shirts.

Hooray for YEA!

YEA was a huge success! Students were happy to see their art displayed in public, parents and teachers enjoyed seeing the creativity of our students. Our display even stopped the Round Table photographer. GREAT JOB by all participants!

What’s Your Problem? by Ms. Rienemschelder

The 6th grade Future Problem Solving Team of Nathan Wojcik, Linwan Lewis, Alyiah Jones, and Caroline McCance traveled to Illinois State University on May 14th and 15th to compete in the 29th annual State Competition. The Ricky Byrdsong Citizenship Award was established in 1999 to honor the memory of Mr. Byrdsong, a parent of three District 65 students and former Northwestern University basketball coach. Ricky's life was committed to helping others and promoting peace in the neighborhoods. He died from injuries sustained in an act of racial violence.

This year students completed more than 790 hours of service to organizations throughout Evanston and beyond. We would like to recognize the following students.

Principally Speaking

This has been another amazing and fulfilling year at Chute Middle School. We are so proud of our students and their academic progress made this year!

We want to congratulate all of our and 8th grade students on their graduation. Our 6th and 7th students also did an outstanding job this school year. We want to thank our dedicated teachers and parents for supporting the efforts of our students.

The staff at Chute has worked extremely hard all year to provide the BEST in academic instruction for our students. I want to sincerely thank the entire staff for their commitment and for making a difference in the lives of our students.

Throughout the summer please encourage your students to read and keep their minds wide open to new experiences!

Finally, we could not have accomplished anything this year without the dedication and support of our incredible PTA. The teachers and entire staff enjoyed the recent Teacher Appreciation Week. We also appreciate all of your donations, kindness and support of Chute Middle School this entire year. We are looking forward to the next school year and the endless possibilities for our students.

Thanks again for a great year and enjoy your summer!

And remember where ever your travels may take you, if your riding in a car Buckle Up It's the Law!!!

J. McHolland
Principal Chute Middle School

Welcome Class of 2012

Over 90 families attended the orientation held Wednesday, May13th. The program began with opening comments from Team Achieve Leader, Ms. Breitenstein, Team Endeavor Leader, Mr. Roche, and assistant principal, Mr. Brown. The Q & A session was conducted by Mr. McHolland, principal and Ms. Schwarzbach, president of Chute PTA.

Groups toured the building and classrooms, visited information displays from all subject and services areas, and socialized with other families. This annual evening program, co-sponsored by the PTA and the Teams, is held to inform students and families about the middle school procedures, policies and curriculum specifically Chute's offerings.

The student handbook, FAQ booklet, and a parent checklist/supply list were distributed as each family registered. The efforts of many volunteers made this program a success, including: Ms. Covode, Ms. Ester, Ms. Ramirez, Ms. Murphy, Ms. Clark, Ms. Crow, Ms. Muyres, Ms. Porter, Ms. Witt- Jansen, Ms. Tarini, Ms. Rogan, Ms. Sagan, Ms. Aiden, Ms. Fillmore, Ms. Sprengelmeyer, Ms. Ruley, Ms. Lindley, and Ms. Urban. The student assistants: Charlie Rees, Vanessa Beaudouin, Ferris Ingraham, Remy Amarteifio, Jessica Garcia, Caroline McCance, Brandon Carter, Jackie Colquitt, Stephanie Austin, Leslie Vega, Hope Carmel, Celina Lindland, Michelle, Foster, John Muyres, and Angela Wong were designated "High Flying Eagles " in either the first or second trimester.

Staff Appreciation Lunch

A huge round of applause to all the Chute parents who served up a bountiful buffet for the teachers and staff to enjoy at the Spring Staff Appreciation Luncheon on May 22. This PTA-organized event never fails to please and this luncheon was no exception. The staff dined on salmon, pasta, salads, sandwiches and a wide variety of desserts made by Chute parents.

We also had a "Congratulations Cake" for Mr. Brown to celebrate his promotion to Principal at King Lab. All together, more than twenty-five Chute families helped to make this event such a success. Special thanks to Krissie Harris who coordinated the luncheon and to Ann Covode and Marianne Moberly who helped with set up.

President’s Message

This has been a great year for PTA! Lots of new parents have gotten involved and we were glad to see a significant increase in attendance at our PTA meetings and PTA-sponsored events. I want to thank everyone who served on the PTA board this year and everyone who has volunteered to take on a PTA position (or two) for next year, especially Stephanie Aiden who will work with me as PTA co-President.

We're pleased to report that almost all of the PTA positions for next year have been filled. We are still looking for an ESCCA co-chair and an 8th Grade Graduation Reception Coordinator (usually a 7th grade parent). Other opportunities to get involved include the Back-to-School Picnic, the Fall Fundraiser committee and the Cultural Arts committee. We are always looking for enthusiastic volunteers!

Look for a mailing in the summer which will include information about PTA membership, the Back-to-School picnic, Open House, and the first PTA meeting of the 2009-2010 school year. Become a PTA sponsor early by mailing back your PTA membership form during the summer.

If you have any questions about Chute PTA, or if you would like to get involved, please contact me at EllenPTA2008@aol.com or 847/933-9318. I hope you all have a restful and enjoyable summer.

Team Supreme
In Mrs. Lange and Mr. Gutierrez’s seventh grade class, we finished out the year studying autobiographies. Students were then challenged to write their own autobiographical pieces with an emphasis on their heritage, future goals, and defining their generation.
We have focused on making the cross-curricular connection with Social Studies and examining literature from the Holocaust. As a class we read the play, The Diary of Anne Frank, and students were challenged to present their acting skills with the Piven Theatre residency.
Science classes have been very productive this year. They have been focusing on the Cornell note taking strategies along with developing teamwork through labs and projects.
Congratulations to all 7th graders on passing the U.S. Constitution test and to all 8th graders on passing the Illinois Constitution test! 7th graders wrapped up their studies this spring learning about the Civil War, while the 8th graders focused on the period from World War II to the Vietnam War.
In math, students participated in two assessments to aid the district in determining the most appropriate placement for each student next year. Classes focused on integrating algebraic concepts with probability and geometry.
Cheers go out to the many Team Supreme students who were recognized as High Flying Eagles this year. Your teachers are very proud of your accomplishments.
Overall, we saw great success using the reader’s and writer’s workshop and the new math textbook this year. End of the year MAP testing gave insight on the success this year has been, and we continue to look forward to providing our students with the tools necessary for their future endeavors.
